A series of practical workshops that supported the motion graphics project.
The flipbook workshop taught me the basics of frame by frame animation, Within the exercise, I experimented with the pacing of the bouncing object, making the movement appear slower as it peaked and faster as it bounced. I also considered how the object would appear if it was moving away from the viewer and how this would differ if the viewer was moving towards it.
In the storyboarding workshop, I was tasked with drawing the frames from a video recording of an orchestra. Every few seconds, the frame would cut to a different scene. I began using a numbering system to record where the frame cut to one it had previously used however this task was still highly challenging. This workshop illustrated that a storyboard doesn’t need to be refined for it to make sense and have purpose, encouraging me to be less precious.
In this workshop we tried directly scratching onto film stock and were able to see the outcome projected on a large screen. I was particularly inspired by the marrying of music and this graphical art form in Len Lye’s film, ‘Free Radicals’.
